Customs Specialist, Release Agent (Afternoon/Night Shift)

Job Summary

The Elite Job is seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Customs Specialist, Release Agent to join our dynamic logistics and compliance team. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring timely and accurate customs clearance and release of shipments. This position is ideal for a highly organized professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is ready to work during the afternoon or night shifts. You will liaise with customs authorities, logistics providers, and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with national and international trade regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and process documentation for import/export shipments to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Prepare and submit accurate customs declarations using appropriate classification codes.

  • Work closely with brokers, carriers, and border services to ensure timely release of goods.

  • Monitor shipment statuses and proactively resolve issues that may delay release.

  • Maintain current knowledge of customs regulations and trade compliance policies.

  • Provide regular reports on customs releases, discrepancies, and trends to the Compliance Manager.

  • Handle high-volume documentation with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Collaborate with internal departments to streamline the customs release process and reduce clearance time.

  • Respond to customs inquiries and audits, supplying required documentation promptly.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of customs procedures and import/export regulations.

  • Proficiency in HS Tariff classification, Incoterms, and related trade documentation.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently during non-standard business hours.

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Comfortable using customs clearance platforms and data entry software.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or logistics.

  • Prior experience in a release or customs clearance role is highly preferred.

  • Familiarity with CBSA/USCBP procedures and customs portals is an asset.

  • Experience handling shipments in different industries (e.g., e-commerce, retail, manufacturing) is a plus.

Working Hours

  • Afternoon Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM (Local Time)

  • Night Shift: 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM (Local Time)

  • Occasional weekends or holidays may be required depending on shipment volumes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of global customs regulations and country-specific import/export rules.

  • Strong multitasking abilities with a high degree of accuracy under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to interpret and apply international trade laws and documentation requirements.

  • Skilled in using MS Office, particularly Excel, and customs entry systems (e.g., CADEX, ACE, or similar).

  • Ability to work well in a remote team environment and communicate across time zones.
